CHAPTER 11

After a restless night, Jake and Pat stood in the stable readying their mounts for the ride that would decide the fate of Chat Escobar. As they saddled their mounts, the dark figure of Seth Pike appeared in the door of the livery stable. In one hand he carried the shoulder rig that had hung under the outlaw’s arm.

“You find out their names for me Sheriff?” Pat asked.

“Yeah I found their saddlebags in their room last night. You ever hear of a couple fellas named Frank Miles or Nick Easton?”

Pat shook his head no. Seth glanced at Jake in question.

“Never herd of em Sheriff,” Jake muttered.

“You got any idea where Escobar is heading?” Jake asked.

“He wasn’t much of a talker, from what I could tell; kinda kept to himself,” Pike went on “Bout three day ride due west of here there’s a little town called Ferron, way I figure it, after three days on the trail he’ll lay up there. There’s an old wagon trail that never was used much, mostly over-growd by now, runs from here to Farren, I’m betting he’s still on the trail. You boys push hard, chances are you’ll run into him. You keep an eye peeled for that black mare.”

Jake calmly walked over to Sheriff Pike. With a smile of gratitude he reached out to shake the solemn Sheriff’s hand.

“I’m mighty gratefull Seth, you was there when I didn’t think I needed ya. Me and Pat here are from Las Animas Colorado, you ever get up that way, you ask anybody, they’ll set ya to my place.”

Just then Seth handed Jake the Colt wrapped in the shoulder rig. “This was Miles’s rig, way I figure it, it(s yours now,” Pike said.

“Thanks Seth,” Jake said as Pike handed him the outlaws rig.

After putting the outlaw’s rig in his saddle bag, Jake and Pat rode out of the stable and followed the westward trail of Chat Escobar. With the rising sun at their backs the two men pushed hard, for they knew the end of this man hunt was now in sight. Where Escobar’s reign of terror had begun Jake didn’t know for sure, but he did know it had to come to an end.

The trail Seth had spoken of was just as he had said: overgrown and nearly nonexistent . The tracks of a single horse were plain. There was no reason to assume these tracks were the tracks of anyone other than the man they hunted. Smooth and uniform, they told the two hunters this rider was in no rush. The two men looked at each other and exchanged smiles.

“I’m figuring he’s got a day on us Pat, if we put some ground behind we might catch em for he gets to town.”

Simultaneously, both men spurred their mounts to a fast trot. Sagebrush, creosote and wild grass dominated. An occasional juniper broke-up the boring dominance of the endless sage. The ground beneath the hoofs of the horses was dry and slack.

The blazing
